Data loss prevention rollout checklist

A staged approach to data loss prevention that protects regulated data without flooding teams with false positives.

Foundations

Classify before you enforce.

  • Agree what counts as sensitive: regulated, confidential and internal.
  • Run discovery to find where that data actually lives.
  • Name data owners who approve policies and exceptions.
  • Align policies with legal, compliance and audit requirements.

Staged enforcement

Move from monitor to coach to block.

  • Start in monitor-only mode per channel: email, endpoint, cloud (CASB) and network.
  • Tune rules against real false positives before users see them.
  • Add user coaching prompts before hard blocks.
  • Enforce blocking for the highest-risk data and channels first.

Operate

Treat DLP as a service, not a project.

Define incident triage, the exception workflow and the risk indicators leadership will see, and keep evidence of policy effectiveness ready for audit.
